Digits That Grow: Mechanical Push‑Pull Display Technology

Unlike conventional LCD or LED screens, our clock makes digits “grow” physically. At its core is a set of seven mechanical push‑pull segments (a~g). For the digit “1”, only the b and c segment actuators extend forward while the rest remain retracted; the two extended segments form a clear “1” in space. At the same time, built‑in sensors detect the extension and instantly illuminate the LEDs inside those segments, making the digit visible even in the dark. This technology is not only novel but also consumes far less power than always‑on displays.

Warm Wood, Precise Mechanics

The case is carved and polished from a single piece of solid wood, retaining the natural breathability of timber. Inside, a precise micro push‑pull system drives each segment with its own miniature solenoid or stepper actuator for fast, crisp movement.
